I anticipated that Brad Bergesen was going to go through natural regression in 2010, but did believe he would be a capable 4th or 5th starter.
For a guy that has mediocre stuff, it is imperative that he hits his spots. He has not shown an ability to do that with any consistency this year.
After allowing 10 hits in 5 innings of work tonight, that means Bergesen has now allowed 44 hits in 30 innings here in July. He obviously is fooling nobody. This is also shown in his OPS against. In ’09 he held opposing hitters to a .714 OPS against. Before tonight this had risen to .927.
Somewhat remarkable to me, is that his Groundball to Flyball ratio has remained basically equal to last year.
He is never going to be a strikeout pitcher, but after averaging 4.74 k’s per 9 innings last-season, that ratio has been reduced to 3.69.
Again, I guess I comeback to his control over everything else. Last year he allowed just 32 walks in 128.1 innings of work. This year, he has allowed 29 walks in 88 innings.
I was against it before, but I think he needs to go back to the Minors and get some innings in down there. When he returns, it can be decided if he will again compete for the back of the O’s rotation, or be added as another multiple inning option to the bullpen.
