David Hernandez earned his first win of the 2010 season, as the Baltimore Orioles won the opening game of a 3 game series in Washington.
Hernandez went 5.1 innings, allowing just 1 run, 1 hit, striking out 3, but walking 5. The MASN combination of Palmer, and Dibble were putting on a clinic in the booth talking about pitching, and understanding game situations.
Watching Hernandez staked to a 4 run lead, and seemingly unwilling to pitch-off of his fastball was just frustrating.
Dibble – a former closer himself – takes one look at Hernandez’s arm, and mechanics – and immediately asks aloud if Hernandez is a future closer candidate. Palmer states aloud how when the O’s pitching coach Rick Kranitz first saw Hernandez last-year, he also immediately stated Hernandez’s future was in the pen.
I’m just ready to see that conversion made already. When it happens, Hernandez can worry less about ‘saving’ himself and just go directly at hitters. It will take better advantage of his arm, and it will improve the O’s bullpen.
The Orioles waited until May 29th last year to promote Matt Wieters in an attempt to avoid Super 2 status. I have to imagine when that self-imposed arbitrary deadline passes, that the promotion of Chris Tillman will occur.
