I have to issue a Mea Culpa to Brian Bass.
I have stated numerous times, starting from last-season, that I do not believe in Bass’ stuff and long-term abilities.
I have stated numerous times, that I believed there were numerous better options existing internally for long-relief. I also argued that I thought it was possible for him to be doing his job, but not the best answer. The idea being that I thought Trembley was using him only when the outcome of the game was not in-doubt.
I am not sure I am totally wrong; I do believe what he showed in 800+ innings at the Minor League level gives a balance of what he is, vs what we are seeing right now.

That said, I have to give Bass the credit he deserves.
Including tonight, in Bass’ last 26.2 innings of work, he has allowed just 19 hits, 4 er, 7 bb’s, with 12 k’s.
I still think there is a great chance he will not be part of the 2010 team for very-long, but that is besides the point.
The point is right now he is doing his job, and doing it well.
Beyond his numbers which point to his effectiveness, it is clear that Trembley has gained confidence in him, and continues to use him in more pressurized situations.
So while I still have my doubts about Bass, I have to offer a mea culpa. His supporters were clearly right, and I was clearly wrong. Bass is better than I gave him credit for, and I hope he has continued success.
