Brian Matusz did not just win his 5th game today, he served notice to the New York Yankees and the American League East.
That notice is that a new day is coming, and as soon as 2010; there is going to be a new Ace to deal with.
Maybe you think these are premature accolades, but I fully expect to be proven correct.
Matusz knows how to pitch, and he proved today he could handle that Yankee Stadium environment.
Matusz was outstanding today. 7 innings, 4 hits, 1 er, 2 bb’s, 3 k’s. Two of those k’s coming in the bottom of the 7th, as Matusz retired Posada, and Jeter to end a possible threat.
The Yankees were embarrassed last-night. A trademark of the Yankees during these last 15 years, is that whenever New York faces adversity, or have their pride bruised; they typically respond the next day with a large-effort.
Matusz had nothing of that today, which makes today very impressive.
Tomorrow with Guthrie on the mound, and a sweep possible, will be very interesting.
The O’s got knocked around in Boston a bit, but this means in back-to-back weekends, the O’s have won series against possible playoff bound Texas, and over the AL East leading Yanks.
