Brian Matusz was pretty dominating last-night in the O’s 4-0 win at Tampa.
Matusz is not going to confuse anyone of Randy Johnson in his prime, but in his own way he was every bit as impressive.
As Palmer pointed out on the telecast, Matusz’s curve was in top-form. That big-break helped him go 7 innings of score-less ball, allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, while striking-out 8.
He was now won 5 straight decisions, and 6 of his past 7.
Since the All-Star break, Matusz is 6-3, with a 3.82 era. In 66 innings, he has allowed 59 hits, 23 walks, with 54 k’s.
Tampa is playing for a Divisional crown, and obviously in the mind-set that every-game matters. The fact that Matusz was able to walk into that building, in that setting and shut-down Tampa is something to take note of.
As an aside, how about Uehara in the 9th? Obviously was not a save situation, but the Rays had absolutely no chance against him. He has great movement, and even better control. His fastball is really the equivalent of 4 different pitches, because he has the ability to work up,down, in, and out.
