Keith Cavanaugh, and Mike Ashley from the Terrapin Times were both guests on WNST today;Cavanaugh on his weekly Terrapin Times report with Bob Haynie, and Mike Ashley with Nestor Aparacio.

I totally disagree with some of the opinions they put forth today.

Re Vasquez – Cavanaugh said he was 90% sure that Vasquez would not beback to MD. I just find that amazingly hard to believe. 90% sure for aguy that will not hire an Agent, says he does not want to go to Europe, and multiple mock-drafts have as a mid-to-late 2nd round pick? If anything, the odds should be heavily tilted to Vasquez returning to College Park.

Ashley stated that even if Vasquez did not perform in the NBA Pre-draftcamps, he expected Vasquez to head to Europe. Ashley made the valid point that European teams would covet Vasquez, because Vasquez would notcount against their American quota.

However, the point that Ashley did not make, is that if Vasquez heads to Europe for 2009-10, he could still cost himself money overall. Meaning that even if Vasquez made several hundred thousand next year, he could cost himself money overall if he was able to play himself into a 1st round NBA draft-choice after his Senior season.

Re Stephenson – Both Cavanaugh, and Ashley spoke to the notion that if Stephenson wanted to be a Terp, it would have occurred by now. Why is that? Stephenson has been looking at Kansas, St John’s and MD for months now. It became pretty apparent that Kansas was the favorite… with Xavier Hill now going to Kansas… it seems unlikely Stephenson becomes a Jayhawk. Why is hard to believe that Stephenson is still considering MD?

You can make the easy inverse point that if Stephenson was dead-seton staying home, and going to St John’s… that that would be done by now. Clearly Stephenson was waiting to see what happened with Hill to Kansas… and probably also waiting for Vasquez’s intentions to become clear. Expect a decision on this shortly, and MD’s chances are far superior to the 30% Cavanaugh gave today.

Re The idea that a guard would consider transferring if Stephenson came, and Vasquez returned – Again, why is that? Hayes is not going totransfer anywhere for his Senior year… Mosley would figure to start atthe 2… Bowie, and Tucker would both get plenty of mts in reserve, and both would realize they would figure to start in 2010-11.

You get Vasquez back by himself, MD can be very good next year… You get Vasquez back, and Stephenson in the fold, the 2009-10 aspirations can be extremely high.
