Position Player of the Week: Henry Urrutia – OF

.500/.500/.636 (11/22) with 1 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI, 0 BB, 2 K (AAA) 

Hammerin’ Hank continues to dominate the minors. As many know, Urrutia’s play was honored with a trip to the MLB Futures Game, even as a 26 year old. This week we also heard Duquette and Showalter both hint that Urrutia may be in their plan for later on this season. While that is certainly a possibility, it won’t happen unless a spot opens up for the Cuban. Starting Pitcher of the Week: Tyler Wilson – LHP

2 GS, 10.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K (AA)

The first start of Wilson’s week was shortened due to rain. This obviously angered him, as he went on to one-hit the Richmond Flying Squirrels through seven strong innings. Wilson is a cerebral pitcher that mixes speeds and sequences very well. His fastball sits in the lower 90’s with a little movement and life. He’s not going to blow it by anyone, but good command and control will always boost a pitchers’ value. Per the Baysox press release, I will let Manager Gary Kendall do the rest of the talking:

“He changed speeds, got his breaking ball over and had a lot of fly balls,” said Manager Gary Kendall. “He had one groundball out and the rest flyouts and strikeouts. He threw the ball really well and changed speeds, which is something he does well. He has been doing it since he got here.”

Relief Pitcher of the Week: Trent Howard – LHP

2 G, 1 GS, 8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K (A+)

Howard technically made a start this week (a good start), but he is a reliever all the way. The lefty throws 88-92 mph with a decent change and slider. He can be filthy at times when he has command and can repeat his delivery. I would be interested to see how Howard handles AA, as he has probably done all that he can at Frederick this year. He’s another potential LOOGY guy, but at the time he can still pitch multiple innings.
