The Baltimore Orioles lost their 2nd game in Minnesota last night, in a game they had no business losing.
The O’s took an early 3-0 lead, and were able to quickly knock the Twins starter Gambino out of his Major League debut.
Matusz labored through 5 innings, allowing 7 hits, 3 er, 1 hr, 2 bb’s, with 3 k’s. There is some satisfaction of watching Matusz only allow 3 er in 5 innings, when he was clearly off. He also was able to hand the bullpen a 3 run lead. However, it was tough to see the O’s score runs in the Top-half of the 2nd and 3rd innings, and see Matusz give up earned-runs in the Home-half of those same innings.
Felix Pie provided an excellent catch, but also a puzzling base-running decision. On a pop-up to 1st-base dugout, both Morneau, and Mauer gave chase. At-least on camera, it was not initially clear which Twin made the catch, but it appeared that Mauer had, and was then trying to avoid falling into the dugout. Pie took off for 3rd, I believe because he thought Mauer was unprepared to make the play. However, it was Morneau who had made the catch and easily threw Pie out at 3rd.
Mickolio took the loss, but Hendrickson, Ray, and Mickolio gave 3.2 innings, and only allowed 1 er. The loss occurred when Bass could not record an out in the 6th, before letting up 3 er.
Michael Aubrey continued to look like a useful bat off the bench, with a double and 3rbi. He would certainly be helped by being a bit more versatile.
