Baltimore heads to the Big Apple for a 3 game series starting Tuesday.
The Orioles will arrive in NY at 16-22 overall, 5-11 vs the AL East, and 7-13 on the road.
The Yankees face Minnesota tomorrow, but are currently 20-17, 7-12 vs the AL East, and 9-7 at home.
Baltimore and New York have split the initial six 2009 games between the two teams.
The scheduled pitching match-ups are:
Tues 5/19: Bergesen vs Sabathia
Wed 5/20: Guthrie vs Hughes
Thurs 5/21: Eaton vs Chamberlain
There have been 58 homers at New Yankee Stadium, during the first 16 games there. The short-porch in right appears to be an easy target. Only time will tell if this is just an anomoly.
I would expect Adam Jones to be back in the lineup Tuesday… sounded like he probably could have played Saturday, but was held back as a precaution. The Stadium has large power-alleys… my preference would be for Pie to get the starts in LF, with Reimold at DH. I am sure the Orioles are not excited about bringing up a starter, and having them make their initial apperance on the road in New York… but starting Eaton is just conceeding that game.
Sabathia is 3-3, with a 3.70 era. In 56 innings, he has allowed 48 hits, 20 walks, and has 37 k’s.
Hughes is 1-2, with a 7.56 era. In 16.2 innings, he has allowed 23 hits, 12 walks, and has 10 k’s.
Chamberlain is 2-1, with a 3.76 era. In 40.2 innings, he has allowed 40 hits, 21 walks, and has 40 k’s.
Posada, Molina, Nady, Bruney, and Wang remain on the DL for New York.
Bergesen will be making his 6th start as an Oriole, and only his 2nd on the road. After allowing 20 hits in his last two starts, it will be interesting to see how Bergesen handles the spot-light of NYC. In 4 of his 5 previous starts, Bergesen has gone at least 5.2 innings, and allowed 3 er or less. That is basically all you can ask out of a guy that projects as a 5th starter or back of the bullpen long-man. If he shows he can compete on the road, he will only raise his stock.
Wednesday’s start for Guthrie is important. Guthrie has made 8 starts in 2009:

5/8: 6 innings, 7 hits, 3 er, 2 bb’s, 8 k’s
5/3: 8 innings, 4 hits, 4 er, 1 bb, 3 k’s

Guthrie is giving the team an opportunity to win most nights, but he needs to provide an effort where he is the reason the team wins on Wed.
