As we have often talked about, the O’s want to avoid their pitchers pitching more than 25-30 innings than they did in the previous year.
With that in-mind, you have to watch the cumulative inning count for several players.
Tillman pitched 135.2 innings in 2008. In 2009, Tillman has pitched 132. This means Tillman is perfectly positioned to finish September in the rotation.
Matusz pitched 105 innings in College in 2008, and another 15-20 in the Arizona Fall League. In 2009, Matusz has a combined 131.2 innings at Frederick, Bowie, and with the O’s. They can probably stick to their program, and have Matusz finish out September in the rotation.
Bergesen has been out of action since July 30th. Assuming he can get back on the mound, he will be fine, as he had 165.1 innings in 2008, and has only had 123.1 innings in 2009.
Hernandez has pitched 129.2 combined innings in 2009, after 141 innings in 2008. Him staying in the rotation through September should also not be a problem.
