It should not have to be said, but you really can only get so excited (or depressed) over one-scrimmage. Maybe it will be proved that Jordan Williams is not able to contribute regularly offensively during his Freshman year. It would not be shocking if that is the case, as the ACC is worlds away from a Connecticut High-school league where he was going up-against 6’4 Centers.
Still, everything you read about Williams is about how much he improved during the last 18-24 months, and how hard he continually works. If the 6’9 245 lb Freshman can just use his body, and bang on the opposition, that will be an advantage this Terps team has over the version from last-year. If he shows he has solid hands, and gets good-positioning in the post, he will be able to score some in Gary Williams’ flex-offense. Some Terp fans are scared about Williams being another ‘Braxton Dupree,’ but I anticipate a player that will help starting with his initial-game.
Padgett showing some offensive-skill in his first College scrimmage is encouraging, but I would not get carried away. I saw Padgett a couple of times last-year as Lincoln played on National tv. He has broad-shoulders and a couple of post-moves, but is overall raw offensively. Again, just adding his athleticism, and ability to block-shots, and rebound will be a big plus for MD this year. With Padgett coming from a National-level HS program, and NYC, it is not surprising that he is a step-ahead of Williams at this juncture.
I think I am most excited by seeing Gregory grab 8 boards, and lots of reports of him looking smoother on offense. If Gregory can consistently compete on the boards, this will be a very good MD team.
Goins contributing with 8pts, and 7 boards is another indication of him being possibly able to help a few mts a game if necessary.
Choi looks like he did not have his shot-falling, but he did fill-up the stat-line. It will be interested to see him during the next scrimmage, and subsequent exhibition. I liked reading that he defended Tucker at-times today. If he can provide solid-defense against a player with Tucker’s athleticism, Choi will be positioned to earn additional minutes off the bench.
While I just said above that you should not take too much from a scrimmage, I think you can read into the numbers from Mosley. He is clearly a confident-kid, and him getting off to a good-start shooting is good to see. Him continuing to do a bit of everything, and getting the defensive-assignment against Vasquez, are signs of a player ready to take his game to the next-level.
