The University of Maryland football team will attempt to move to 3-1 on the 2010 season, with a home win over Florida International today. After playing an emotional game against a border-rival last week, it would be easy to overlook a team from the Sun Belt conference.
That would be a mistake.
While it is quite possible the Terps overwhelm Florida International with their superior depth, it would also not be surprising if Maryland was lacking some focus today.
Hopefully Coach Friedgen was able to get the attention of his team by reminding them that Florida International plays in the same conference as Middle Tennessee. I’m sure Friedgen has also spent time reminding his players that Florida International has been very competitive these first two weeks in their losses to Rutgers (Big East), and Texas A&M (Big 12).
In the 19-14 loss to Rutgers, the Panthers had 371 yards of offense to Rutgers’ 172. They lost the game in large part due to their 5 turnovers, and 14 penalties.
At Texas A&M last week, the Panthers lost 27-20. The game ended with the Panthers being stopped on 4th down at the Aggies 7 yard-line. The loss had to be especially painful for Florida International, as they held a two-touchdown lead going to the 4th Quarter.
I note that A&M had success running the ball last week (206 rushing yards) and hope the Terps are able to establish a similar blue-print today.
