Winning games in the American League East, particularly on the road is always going to be a fight.
Despite watching another game get away from the Orioles at Yankee Stadium last night, I left the game feeling like the O’s are closing the overall talent gap.
This Oriole team expects to score runs against anyone, anywhere… and the lineup has only improved with the arrival of Reimold. When Wieters ascends in a couple of weeks to take over for Zaun, this is going to be an extremely strong unit.
Bergesen won the Jim Palmer award for the Organization’s best Minor League Pitcher last year, but the reality is there are a number of arms in the system more talented… ie Matusz, Tillman, Arrieta, Patton, Hernandez, etc…
So, when you see Bergesen making his 6th career start… and he is on the road in NY… and able to surive a 2run bomb to Arod in the 1st, to give you 6.1 innings, 3 hits, and 4 er… you have to be somewhat excited by that.
This is a guy that projects as our 5th starter, or a bullpen swing guy… and he is showing an ability to compete.
The next guys that come-up, will come-up with the expectation of winning… not just competing.
If the O’s are going to leave NY with a win, you figure it has to be tonight with Guthrie.
Maybe it happens, maybe it does not… but I think it is more important to realize the overall gap is closing.. and when Baltimore comes back to NY this year.. makes additionall trips to Boston and Fenway…. heads to Tampa to take on the AL Champs…. I really think you will see the O’s start to win their share of those games during the 2nd-half of 2009.
