With Uehara expected to be activated off the DL for the start June 10th, changes to the pitching staff are in-order.
The most likely scenario is that Berken will be sent back to AAA.
I would suggest another option.
For Uehara, I would send Alberto Castillo down.
Without Castillo, the team would be lacking a left-handed specialist. Since the team is uncomfortable using Hendrickson in such a fashion, and seems committed to keeping Sherrill as the closer; I think the O’s should release Hendrickson, and promote Wilfredo Perez.
(I know you could just activate Uehara, release Hendrickson, and keep Castillo – but I would prefer Perez)
I would be fine with Hernandez or Berken as the 5th starter, and as the 7th in the bullpen.
However, my preference would be to send Berken back to AAA, move Hernandez to the bullpen, and promote Troy Patton to the 5th starter.
This would leave the O’s with a pitching staff that looks like:
Guthrie, Uehara, Hill, Bergesen, Patton
Sherrill
Johnson
Albers
Baez
Perez
Bass
Hernandez
EDIT – I have been told that Perez is injured… I see that his last apperance for Bowie was June 2nd, and the Baysox site does not list him on the DL, so I do not know if that is accurate or not.
