The Baltimore Orioles squandered numerous opportunities to win last night, in a 2-1 loss to the New York Yankees.
Held scoreless after a 1st-inning homer from Nick Markakis, the O’s seemingly had nearly endless chances to breakthrough.
You could concentrate on that, and easily make the lead story another tough loss in NY.
Or, you could talk about the outing from David Hernandez.
After a 30 pitch bottom of the 1st, where NY loaded the bases, Hernandez was able to get out of the inning without any damage.
After allowing a homer in the 2nd, Hernandez came right back and made his pitches.
He provided the O’s with the opportunity to win, going 6 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 er, 3 bb’s, with 4 k’s.
For making his 1st apperance in NY, it was an outstanding effort.
What his start means in the bigger picture is what has me excited as a fan this morning. There have been a lot of thoughts from O’s fans (including myself) that Hernandez and Bergesen are future bullpen types.
That Bergesen might eventually find his way to long-relief, and that Hernandez might profile best as our future closer.
That conjecture might eventually prove to be true. However, every-time these two provide quality starts, there is a little more reason for optimism.
These two are good prospects, but they are not of the same caliber of Tillman, Matusz, and Arrieta. If you are getting competitive starts out of Bergesen, and Hernandez – what are you going to get out of the Big 3?
